Historical Dance Program

Week One, July 13*-21, 2019

Faculty: Dorothy Olsson and Kaspar D. Mainz

Julie Iwasa, Dance Assistant.

For over twenty-five years the historical dance program has been a highly successful part of the Amherst Early Music Festival, itself the largest festival of its kind in the world. Students particularly enjoy the opportunity for performance, along with stimulating classes by dance historians and performers.

The theme of this year's Amherst Early Music Festival is "Music of Italy." Reflecting that theme, the Historical Dance Program will focus on dance materials from Italy as well as France.

Technique classes and rehearsals begin on Saturday July 13 - Sunday July 14. The schedule from Monday July 15 - Friday July 19 consists of two morning Baroque dance classes for all dancers, in technique and a themed topic (see below). The afternoon comprises two separate classes, each with its own performance opportunity:

1) an opera project, #Anch’Io: Ariadne Scenes, (performance July 19), and
2) a dance project, Balli alla francese (performance July 20).

NOTE: Due to constraints of producing a fully staged and costumed opera project in one week, dance roles in the opera project are limited to ten places, which will be determined by an audition on Sunday, July 14. Non-opera project dancers will participate in the Balli alla francese class.

Tuition $600. Click here for room and board options.

* Festival week one runs July 14-21, dancers arrive one day early for the Historical Dance program.
